Remedies For Dogs With Upset Stomachs

You probably already know this, but your dog's nose and stomach will get him into more health problems than any other behavior. Dogs have an imaginative appetite and will eat almost anything that seems appealing at the moment. Just like humans, if they eat something that doesn't sit well the dog will end up with an upset stomach

Upset stomachs in dogs however, can be far more serious than in humans, again because of their lack of discretion in what they eat. If they have just downed a table scrap full of fat that is upsetting their stomach, they will try to cure themselves by vomiting or possibly with a bout of diarrhea.

If you dog's stomach is rumbling but he is otherwise alert and normal behaving you there are a couple of remedies.  First put up his food bowl but make sure he has plenty of water available. Secondly, for dogs less than 30 pounds, try giving him a couple of dollops of plain yogurt to settle his digestive system.

After 12 hours or so you can introduce him to a bland food like boiled rice or cooked chicken. Keep him on that for a day or two then slowly reintroduce his old food.

However anytime your canine pal has a stomach problem you should look for signs of a more serious condition. Here are a few symptoms to keep an eye out for. If any of these are present, you should call a vet.

Bloated stomach or obvious pain in the belly. This could be an indication of a blockage in the bowel and is extremely dangerous.  Call your vet right away. Your dog tries to vomit but can't is another symptom of a blockage. Blood in the vomit. Your dog's gums are pale or yellow and sticky to the touch. If your dog is a puppy and has not had all of his shots, call a vet. There could be serious parasites causing the upset stomach. If your dog appears to be in pain, call the vet. We love our dogs and they trust us to take care of their health. Knowing what to look for and what to do is in their best interest and can save a trip to the vet as well.
