Best Dog Food - Bad Ingredient Examples

While most Vets do have your dogs best interest in mind when it pertains to treating problems, they mostly miss the boat when it come to nutritional requirements.

dog food container

Like human Doctors seem to let drug reps sway their decisions on what drugs to prescribe, so do Vets let dog food reps talk them into what foods to sell.

Dog Food

The ingredient list below is from a dog food brand found in most Vets offices, so lets take a look at the ingredients and see if it would pass our test of a healthy pet food.

Ingredients:
Ingredients Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Soybean Oil, Dried Egg Product, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Iodized Salt, Choline Chloride, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Vitamin E Supplement, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

First lets see what this company says about this formula, and then I'm going to tell you the truth.

They says: If your dog lives life on fast forward or just has trouble keeping weight on, This formula is packed with wonderful flavor, calories, and nutrients. It has all the nutrition an active dog requires to stay healthy and strong. It's the perfect choice for sporting dogs, show dogs or finicky eaters.

Now let's use what we learned about reading labels and see if this formula is something you should feed your dog.

1)- Ingredient number one is Ground Whole Grain Corn, which means by weight this is the prominent ingredient in this formula. So what's wrong with ground whole grain corn?

When corn products are used as the primary ingredient in a dog food, they are using it as the primary protein source. Short term this will not hurt your dog, but long term it does deprive him of the animal based protein that their bodies are better equipped to absorb and retain. Much of the corn protein will pass through your dog as poop.

2) - The 2nd ingredient listed is Chicken By-Product Meal, which if you read my article titled Best Dog Food - The By-Product Debate; you'll know that this ingredient alone is a show stopper for me. I will not feed my dogs any food that uses by-products as an ingredient. There is no real consistency of this ingredient and it could be anything, in this case to do with Chickens...

I should say anything except actual Chicken meat, believe me if they use enough Chicken meat to legally call it Chicken they would. They don't even try to use the word Chicken in the name of this product... I wonder why?

3) - The 3rd ingredient is Animal Fat: STOP and Back Away from the bag! Never feed your dog a food that has Animal Fat listed as in Ingredient.

The only thing we know for sure about Animal fat is it comes from the tissues of mammals. These mammals could be horses, pigs, goats, rats, roadkill and even dogs or cats. These animals could have been put down because they were sick or they died of old age.

The bottom line is we don't know what Animal fat is at any given batch, and I don't know about you but I'm not taking the chance that I'm feeding my dogs any of their sick dead peers.

What they should of used here would have been Chicken Fat, which then we would of know exactly what we were getting, but if they wouldn't even use real Chicken meat, I am not surprised not to see Chicken fat.

There are other ingredients in this formula that doesn't make me happy, but there really is no need to go past the first three... not one of them would be included in a food I would feed my dogs.

Dog Shedding Problem Can Be The Food

Dog shedding is a big concern for pet owners.

dog food container

Many people do not want a dog for fear of the abundance of hair that will invade their home.

Dog Food

Large dogs equal more area of fur which also adds up to more hair loss.

One thing to consider if your dog is shedding a great deal is the type of food you have been feeding him or her.

You may be blaming the dog breed or the weather for the hair loss, but Fido may be losing hair because of the nutrition content in the quality of food he is consuming.

Nutrition plays an important role in hair growth and hair loss.

Do not blame yourself totally if you feel the dog food is to blame. Hair loss is also the result of environment and genetics. Just like some people get gray hair earlier than others and some develop wrinkles at an early age. Some dogs just naturally shed more.

If you feel the food is to blame you may want to check the ingredients and also fat content. For many dogs the amount of fat content is essential to maintain a healthy coat of hair. This does not just account for a shiny haired canine, but dogs need this oil for their skin which in turn holds the hair follicles in place. The sebaceous glands need oil to properly produce for hair to be healthy.

Before you go out and buy new dog food try adding a bit of oil to Rovers next meal. He will probably enjoy the extra flavor. Do this for about 2 weeks and see if you notice a change. You may also try rubbing a bit of baby oil on your dog and kennel him for about an hour and then bathe him with regular dish washing liquid to remove the excess baby oil. This will help moisturize his skin and may jump start his skin to retain more hair.

Dog shedding is natural and we do need to help our dogs remove their excess hair by grooming which will in turn alleviate the excess hair shedding in our house.

Feeding a Fussy Dog

When we "adopted" our latest dog, Hamish, he was about 6 years old, and had already gone through at least 3 homes that we know of, and perhaps more . He was originally a rescue dog from the RSPCA, and was found living wild in a cemetery.

Now Hamish is a very small dog (6Kg), so he had to have his wits about him to survive in such an unforgiving place. Needless to say he had a little bit of a wild streak in him, and he was very distrustful about food.

Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

When we first got him home, he insisted on sniffing all food, and would not eat in front of us. When we put his food down, we would hold some out for him to sniff, but he'd sniff it then walk away. However we often found that the food was gone by next morning.

The problem is that we also have a cat, who is fed nearby, and at dinner we feed them the same food (raw chicken necks, raw chicken wings, meat, etc). So we had to be sure that it wasn't just our 6.5 Kg cat stealing his food!

He also wouldn't eat cooked food - and I had always cooked for our previous dogs and they loved it! I'm not sure Hamish had ever seen a vegetable before, and they definitely didn't smell right! Actually, our previous dogs were bull terrier crosses, and they ate anything that didn't move! Their favourite food was what I call "dog porridge", but it actually has meat, lots of vegetables, and just a couple of cups of rolled oats - our boys just couldn't get enough of that. This was a whole new experience for us!

So how did we solve it?

The first thing was to get Hamish into a routine - to expect food at the same time each day. That meant not leaving the food bowls lying around if he didn't eat his food right away.

Straight after our walk in the morning, I would put out a little commercial dog food for Hamish, and cat food for the cat. After 15 or 20 minutes, it was taken away, whether eaten or not. I did however leave out a small bowl of dried biscuits for each of them.

At night, both animals are fed fresh food, and generally the same thing. I feed them around 6:30, just after I have watched the news. And I use the same method. The food goes down, and it is lifted after 15 or 20 minutes, whether eaten or not.

The second thing was to introduce vegetables slowly. I started with a meat loaf, as you can hide grated vegetables in meat loaf pretty well! Then (and I know you're not supposed to do this!) I would feed him tidbits of vegetables from my dinner. Of course he loved them, because it wasn't dog food. So slowly we got Hamish to start eating vegetables.

The final thing we did was to buy him a glass (or china) dog food bowl. I know I don't like drinking tea or coffee from a Styrofoam or plastic cup, and I wondered if the plastic food bowls didn't have some smell or taste that sensitive dog noses could pick up. So, he got a proper food bowl.

I'm pleased to say Hamish has now turned into a normal dog, food wise. He eats his food 95% of the time, he even hangs around the kitchen while I'm cooking in case I drop anything on the floor. It's not always worth stealing, but he checks it out anyway, and sometimes whatever is dropped is worth eating!

Dog Food - Easy Ways To Make Dog Food At Home

You love your dog, so for the good of his health you've decided to make your own dog food. If you're on a budget, and have a large dog, making your own dog food may be less expensive than buying commercial dog food.

dog food storage

You've got the choice of feeding your dog raw food, or of cooking it. If you cook it, you can incorporate the carbohydrate in the form of brown rice into the meals.

Dog Food

Your Dog's Main Meal - Easy Dinners

Protein (meat or poultry) shouldn't form more than 20 per cent of your dog's diet. Your vet can give you precise proportions of protein to carbohydrate according to your dog's size, age, and lifestyle.

Brown rice is a nutritious carbohydrate, and once they get used to it, most dogs like it. You can cook up a big pot of brown rice, with a half pound or a pound of minced steak or cooked chicken and make sufficient dog dinners for a week. Add a few carrots, and pumpkin in season. Occasionally, use oatmeal instead of brown rice.

Feeding Your Dog A Raw (Uncooked) Diet

While it's true that no one cooks a wolf's dinner, animals in the wild don't live as long as domesticated animals. But if you feel that raw meat, with some added grated vegetables are best for your dog, get veterinary advice before you start giving your dog vast amounts of raw meat. This is because it's difficult to get the protein balance right if you're feeding raw meat.

Supplements - Does Your Dog Need Additional Vitamins And Minerals?

Whether you feed your dog commercial dog food, or homemade, supplementing his nutrition is a good idea, especially for young dogs, for older dogs, and if you're considering breeding a litter of puppies.

It's best to get your supplements from your vet, because he knows your dog, and knows what the dog's special needs are.

What is Duodenal Ulcer and How Can it be Prevented?

Ulcer is a tasteless disease nowadays and many have heard of it or suffered from it. But not everyone knows that there are some types of ulcer that sway distinct parts of the body and that manifest differently. The general definition of ulcer states that ulcer represents an open sore or wound that can appear on protective membranes in the body. Depending on where this lesion appears, ulcer divides into a few types. What we are interested in is the duodenal ulcer, which occurs in the duodenum, or the small intestine. The duodenum connects to the stomach at its upper end, and sometimes a wound appears in the lining of this upper area. This is duodenal ulcer. The same bacteria that causes all kinds of ulcers to appear is guilty for duodenal ulcer too. This bacteria is called heliobacter pylori, and it eats the sensitive lining of the duodenum. Once it has started eating it the stomach's acid and juices that come in feel with the wound also deteriorate it. It has been proven that some types of medicationsquicken the deterioration process and if someone who is suffering from duodenal ulcer is also a drinker and a smoker that things a pretty bad because alcohol and nicotine are enemies of the sensitive tissues that can be found in the duodenum.

science diet for sensitive stomachs

Studies have shown that if someone has a history of duodenal ulcer in the house then the chances for that someone to also become ill of this disease are greatly increased, especially in men's case.

Sensitive Stomachs

The symptoms that duodenal ulcer presents are quite similar to the symptoms of most ulcers : pain in the stomach, heartburn and burning sensations in the throat area, indigestion after eating and in some cases severe pain in the stomach during the night. But if duodenal ulcer is left untreated then the danger greatly increases because it turns into a bleeding duodenal ulcer, a severe condition with life-threatening complications. The symptoms of bleeding duodenal ulcer are vomiting, and the vomit contains blood in it, and black loose stools.

If you have experienced any of the symptoms above visit your local physician and ask for a diagnose. Duodenal ulcer can be detected by a standard medical test that involves a extra x-ray tehnique, or by an endoscopy, a policy that allows the physician to look inside a pacient's digestive tract.

Once it's discovered the medicine that follows is very simple, it involves taking a few distinct types of medication order to eliminate the H pylori bacteria and protect the sensitive lining of the duodenum from added damage. In a small amount of cases where severe complications of bleeding ulcer appeared surgical operation was required but this can only happen if you leave the disease untreated. So if you have reached the middle-age and you have a stressful lifestyle and you also eat spicy food it's recommended that you periodically visit your physician so that any sign of ulcer is discovered and eliminated early.

secret Caffeine: Foods and Anxiety

Caffeine is a drug. It is often incommunicable in foods. If you are sensitive to caffeine, you may be experiencing symptoms of anxiety, panic and depersonalization.

science diet for sensitive stomachs

Just when you think you're free of caffeine and the anxiety related with it, it begins popping up in the strangest places. You might not be aware of this fact but many foods contain minimal (and sometimes much more) amounts of caffeine.

Sensitive Stomachs

Caffeine is a drug added to many substances and a large contributor to feelings of anxiety, panic, racing or irregular heartbeat and total shakiness. It initially acts as a stimulant but later on as a depressant as it lowers serotonin levels in the brain.

Caffeine often alters blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling anxious, weak, unable to focus, clumsy and irritable.

The corporal and emotional symptoms tasteless to reactive hypoglycemia (racing heart, weakness, anxiety, panic) often disappear within a few days of stopping caffeine.

Insomnia often reconciles itself quickly, after caffeine is slowly eliminated from one's diet.

Hidden Caffeine

Here are a few sources of caffeine, incommunicable yet very much at work:

- Decaffeinated Coffee is a big offender. Some brands genuinely contain over 36 mg of caffeine, just sufficient to keep you awake at night and nervous while the day if you are sensitive to caffeine.

- Teas also contain caffeine, unless fully decaffeinated. Caffeine may be less than coffee but after a few cups a day or a large iced tea with dinner, don't be surprised if anxiety, irritability and insomnia seep in. Green tea also contains caffeine. Although healthful, it may add to feelings of anxiety and irritability for some.

- Cocoa/Hot Chocolate is delicious going down but the after-affects may be hard to take. Dark chocolate contains caffeine, milk chocolate a small less. The darker the chocolate the higher the caffeine count. Chocolate candy, cakes and ice cream contain caffeine as well.

- Colas and other Sodas often contain caffeine. All the time check the label before drinking. Orange soda often contains as much caffeine as colas and root beers. A "Big Gulp" might turn out to be a Big Panic for those sensitive to caffeine.

- Ice Cream: Coffee flavor in particular may contain more caffeine than a cola.

- Chocolate and Coffee flavorings often contain caffeine.

- Headache remedies may contain caffeine. Check labels.

If you are sensitive to caffeine, experiencing anxiety, panic, insomnia, stomach issues, it might be time to check labels.

Cardinal Rule: Never stop caffeine use cold turkey. slowly wean yourself off of caffeine products to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, sluggishness, muscle cramps and dizziness.

Remember, the foods you choose to ingest can make or break your recovery from anxiety and depersonalization. choose foods that work for you rather than against you!

Dog Food - How the Experts Read the Label on the Food Bottle Or Can

With so many choices on the market, how can you be sure you are feeding the right food for your dog? The information's all there on the label, if you know what you are looking for. Look for the nutritional claim right up top.

dog food storage bin

Is the food 100 percent nutritionally complete? If so, it is for nearly all life stages. Growth and maintenance, on the other hand, is for early development, puppy foods are marked as such, as are foods for senior dogs.

Dog Food

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. The first three or four ingredients will tell you the bulk of what the food contains. Look for the highest quality ingredients, like meat and grains, to be among them.

The guaranteed analysis tells you what levels of protein, fat; fiber and moisture are in the food, in that order. While these numbers are meaningful, they will not tell you much about the quality of the food.

Nutritional value is in the dry matter, not the moisture content. In many ways, seeing is believing. If your dog has bright eyes, a shiny coat, a good appetite and a good energy level, chances are her diet is fine. Golden Retrievers rarely skip their meals.

Some studies have shown that soaking food for a short period of time prior to being fed increases its digestibility and lessens the chances of gastric disorders such as bloat.

As dogs mature and slow down they no longer have the protein or caloric needs of younger dogs. The ingredients of the food should reflect these changes.

All About Frogs

Did you perceive that frogs are thought about one of the most prominent biological indicators of the health of our planet's ecosystems? In 1989 it was discovered that in some areas the frog habitancy was declining and in their search for an answer, scientists started widespread explore on frogs and their surrounding environment. Frogs are very sensitive to changes in the ecosystem, so studying the frog habitancy as it increases or decreases within a specific system can alert scientists to a health question within that system well before the damage is irreversible.

science diet for sensitive stomachs

There are almost 5000 species of frogs that are currently known about and new species are being discovered every year. Amazingly, there is a lot of landmass all colse to the world that has never seen humans; therefore it is unknown how many species of frogs there admittedly are. But, as new species are discovered, existing species are becoming extinct as their habitat undergoes changes due to encroachment upon their homes or due to pollution.

Sensitive Stomachs

Frogs vary in size, fluctuating from less than half an inch to two and half feet with the rear legs extended. Here are a few more miniature known facts:

Frogs in wet areas hibernate under water and digest air through their skin; in some areas, where there is a drought or very dry season, they 'estivate', which means they burrow into the soil and come to be dormant until the rains rehydrate the earth. Ice crystals form in the bladder, in the body cavity and under the skin of frogs, stopping their heart and their breathing. A partially frozen frog is reanimated when the place where it hibernates gets above freezing. It has to do with the amount of glucose in their system. Frogs cannot live in salt water at all. Frogs digest water through their skin, keeping them hydrated. Frogs do not drink. Some frogs can jump 20 times the distance of their body. Almost all frog croaking will be of the male variety-most female species do not croak or sing. Scientists discovered that frogs throw up by throwing up their stomach first, and then using their forelegs to dig out the stomach contents and then they swallow the stomach back down again-ewww! You cannot get warts from toads or frogs. It is a human virus that causes them. All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads.

So, if you are fortunate enough to hear the chorus of the frogs, you can rest assured that you are living in an area that, for the most part, is frog-friendly. Don't complain about them keeping you up at night; instead rejoice in their cacophony and do your part to insure that their habitat remains a wholesome environment in which to live. It is your habitat too!

Dog Food Feeding Requirements - How Much Food Should I Feed My Dog

There is an old saying from a very wise dog owner: "When he's thin I feed him more and when he's fat I feed him less". We can all learn a valuable lesson from that. You know when your dog is fat so wouldn't that be an indication that he's getting too much food? Same goes for a dog that's too skinny. But there are some rules you really need to follow when deciding what food to give your dog and just how much is too much.

dog food storage

One thing you should understand about dog food companies, they have determined that the quantity of food you feed your dog should be based on their weight and that is completely inaccurate! Here are some things you need to consider: What breed is your dog; what kind of exercise do you give him; is he a puppy, adult or senior dog; does your dog look overweight or underweight. This just means you need to be a little educated on how much your dog actually NEEDS and not how much a dog food company WANTS you to feed him. There is a big difference. The more you feed him, the more you will need to buy more of their food. Get it?

Dog Food

So, What is a Dog Owner To Do

Relax...you just need to understand your dog's energy needs. It goes like this. If you have a large dog that is pulling an Eskimo sled, your dog will need about five times the amount of food that an indoor dog needs who rarely gets exercise.

First, figure out your dog's RER. This stands for Resting Energy Requirements. This is the amount of energy that a dog would need while remaining at rest. Example: a 20 lb. dog needs 366 calories per day if he/she is just resting the entire day. Then you take into account the exercise you give them. If you take this 20lb. dog out for two 30 minute walks per day, that is considered moderate activity for him/her. Then you take that moderate activity times 3. (366 X 3 = 1098 calories) This will give you a better estimate as to how many calories your dog needs for his activity level. If he doesn't go for as many walks in the winter, then you need to tone down the food.

To figure out how many calories your dog needs, the chart below is for a 20 lb. dog. They need 366 calories BEFORE any type of exercise, so if your dog is 40 lbs, he would need double the calories (732) before any exercise, etc.

Activity Level X RER (which in this case is 366 calories per a 20 lb dog)

To lose weight: 1.0 X RER

Neutered Male Adult w/normal activity: 1.6 X RER

Regular Adult w/normal activity: 1.8 X RER

Light Exercise: 2.0 X RER

Moderate Exercise: 3.0 X RER

Heavy Exercise: 4.8 X RER

Puppies (up to 4 months old): 3.0 X RER

Puppies (4 mo. - adult): 2.0 X RER

You need to start out with a good quality food. You may pay more, but your dog will not need as much of the premium food to get a balanced diet. Poor quality food takes more because there are so many fillers. Not to mention your dog can get digestive problems from it. Read your labels.

Next you need to get an accurate weight of your dog from your vet. Ask him/her what they feel your dog's ideal weight should be. Then you can check the chart above with your dog's activity level and go from there. Don't forget about the treats you are feeding him. They are calories, too! And remember the old saying: When he's thin I feed him more and when he's fat I feed him less". There's good value in that statement.

Dog Food: What You May Not Know

How much do you really know about the food that you are feeding your dog? Are you fully aware of the quality of the food, the main ingredients, and how it can help you dog live a healthy, active life? Sadly, many people are unaware of exactly what their dogs are eating. Price is often the deciding factor when purchasing dog food rather than the quality of the food. Perhaps it is time that you take a second look at what you are feeding your dog on a daily basis. You may quickly realize that you need to make changes in an effort to better your dog's health.

dog food dispenser

· Quality - Skimping on the quality of the food should never be an option. Sure, this may mean purchasing a more expensive food, but it will be well worth it. The price that you pay for your dog's food will determine the quality of it. High quality food is made of more expensive ingredients. How is the quality of your dog's food?

Dog Food

· Main ingredients - Have you ever read the list of ingredients that are used to create your dog's food? Unhealthy brands will often include corn as the first ingredient. Your dog is NOT a vegetarian. He needs plenty of meat and proteins. Make sure the ingredient list begins with some sort of high quality protein.

· Added benefits - How does your dog's food encourage your pet to live a healthy, active life? Some brands use this factor to help sell dog food. However, the food that you choose should help your dog maintain a healthy lifestyle. Look closely at the food that you have chosen for your pet and determine how it can help him live longer life. Are there added nutrients that will promote healthy living?

· Going "organic" or "natural" - You've heard of people eating an organic diet, but have you heard of pet's eating organic or natural? You dog can benefit greatly from this by not being exposed to many of the preservatives and other chemicals that may affect his health. Again, it may be a bit pricey, but it is worth it to see your pet flourish the way he is intended to.

Be sure that you are fully aware of what your dog is consuming on a daily basis. The quality of the food should be one of your top priorities. You dog will live a healthier, happier life.

Before it got there it could be hormone ingested and chemical laden and they do not need to disclose that. Add to that problem the fact that most dog food companies use byproducts that include road kill and diseased carcasses and the bodies of euthanized animals that are brought from the shelters, many times thrown into the mix with collars, tags and even the plastic bags that they are kept in.

What to Do When Your Dog Or Cat Won't Eat

Your dog won't eat. Or your cat is a picky eater. So what on earth do you do?

First, a caveat. No animal will willingly starve itself. But ALWAYS have your pet seen by a vet when there's a change in behavior. You need to rule out illness before embarking on solving a pet's eating problem. Be sure to check for a bad tooth as this is often overlooked as a cause of eating issues. The second caveat: Eating problems can be complex and the tips offered here are simplistic. I offer them with 30 years of experience as a dog owner, breeder, handler and fancier in the world of dogs, but you should discuss them with your vet to see if any are a plausible remedy for your pet's situation.

Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

We'll start with dogs, and assuming that your dog is healthy but not a good eater, here are some potential reasons why and ideas for fixing it.

If you feed your dog treats during the day, stop. You want your dog hungry at meal times. If your dog is a show dog, remember that bait should be offered in TINY pieces, it's not meant to be dinner. When it comes to meals, put the dog's food bowl on the floor, give her 10 minutes to eat it, and if it isn't touched, pick it up and put it away. Don't feed again until the next meal, and resist the temptation to give treats. Do this for a whole week because what you're doing here is behavior modification. Remember, a healthy dog won't starve itself to death, but a stubborn, healthy dog could modify YOUR behavior if you cave in.

If you change pet foods frequently, stop. Frequent diet changes can create a finicky eater. The dog learns to "holdout" to see what will be offered next. When you find a nutritious diet your pet will eat, stay with it. If you MUST change the pet's diet, do it gradually over a two week period. Add a small amount of the new diet to the old food, and each day, increase the amount of the new feed while decreasing the amount of the current food. This gradual change will help prevent diarrhea, vomiting and finicky eating.

With picky eaters, it's important to feed a "super premium" brand of dog food. These foods cost a little more and are made with better ingredients, but they are nutritionally dense. This means that your dog is actually eating less in quantity than the cheaper brands bought at grocery stores (these foods have the nutritional value of bark), but because there are more "calories per cup" in a premium food, they're actually getting more nutrition. Look for brands such as Merrick's "Grammy's Pot Pie" (canned food), California Natural, Prarie, Canidae, Flint River, Nutro, Wellness, Eagle Pack Holistic or Nutrisource.

Mixing kibble with a small amount of canned dog food and water will also make it enticing. This next part is important: The single most natural way to increase a pet's appetite is to warm their food because it increases the smell and makes it more appetizing.

Perhaps your dog has a health issue or is on a medication that makes him not want to eat. She's under a vet's care, but the task of getting nutrition into her falls on you. Now what? First, understand that the less a dog eats, the less he WANTS to eat. Add to that the dog who comes to associate food with nausea and you have a real problem, so the sooner you can get your dog to WANT to eat on his own, the better. So much for the obvious.

We'll start with the simplest remedies and work our way up to a radical solution that worked for one of my dogs. Assuming that your dog is on a high quality feed but still not eating, you may need to go to the next step: making dog food taste even better.

You don't want to make these next foods a daily staple, mostly because the high sodium content of many of them would be contra-indicated for dogs in renal failure or with heart issues (if your dog does have kidney issues, check out a really informative web site here.) The following foods have been tried and tested by people in the dog fancy and are suggested ONLY as a means to jump start the appetite in a sick or compromised dog: Sardines, canned cat food, Gerber's baby food - especially turkey or sweet potato, braunschweiger, Limburger Cheese, broth, pureed liver, Dinty Moore Beef Stew, yogurt, cottage cheese/cream cheese, canned mackerel, scrambled eggs with cream cheese, chicken noodle soup - and even this one: hard-boiled eggs smashed up in French Vanilla yogurt, slightly warmed.

Sometimes, you may need to "jump start" an appetite with something so enticing, it's irresistible. Here is the original recipe for "Satin Balls," one of the most requested recipes on Wellpet, Showdogs-L, VetMed, and other popular e-mail lists for serious dog people:

10 pounds of cheap hamburger meat
1 lg. box of Total cereal
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs AND shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf. Divide the batch into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.Thaw as needed and feed raw! (This is also a good way to put weight on a skinny dog, increase energy, and to alleviate itchy, flaky skin). This isn't a substitute for meals, it's meant to whet a dog's appetite. If the dog is eating this eagerly, start mixing it with kibble gradually. The idea is to wean them off the Satin Balls and onto kibble.

Next, we move on to "fixes" that come in a tube or pill. Remember that the point of these products is to stimulate an appetite and are not long term solutions; We start with Re-Vita whose products are said to be effective for problem appetites; "Pet-Tinic" is a liquid dietary supplement containing iron, copper and 5 essential vitamins. The palable meat-flavored liquid is readily accepted and one "tester" reported that it brought back her pet's appetite almost immediately, Because of its contents, you'll want to have your vet's approval before using this. "Nutri-Cal" is pure nutrition that squeezes out like toothpaste; dogs like its taste and it's a quick way to get nutrition into a dog. When diluted with water, Dyne High Calorie Dietary Supplement can be used to combat dehydration and provide energy because each ounce provides approximately 150 calories containing vitamins and minerals that maintain constant therapeutic blood levels.

If none of the aforementioned tips work, this is where I get pretty serious because my own philosophy is that a lack of appetite is a lousy reason for a dog to die. What you'll read next isn't pleasant - but if you love your dog, you have to get nutrition into her. As far as I know, there are four ways to do this when the dog can't eat on his own: syringe food into the dog's mouth, stuff food down the dog's throat, hook the dog up to an IV, or insert a stomach tube. I've done all of them at one time or another. And they all stink, but they're preferable to the alternative: a dog who wastes away and dies.

Syringing: You'll need a couple of large syringes from your vet. Using canned food; determine the amount your dog needs to sustain his weight, divide that amount in half and spoon that much into a blender (you and this blender will become inseparable over the coming days). Add enough warm water to blend easily into a very fine puree and for each meal, gently syringe the puree into the side of the dog's lips. Or, you can cut to the chase. Pry the dog's mouth open and squeeze the syringe plunger down so that the food trickles to the side and back of the dog's mouth. It takes a bit of time to get the hang of this since you don't want the dog to aspirate food into his lungs. Speak to the dog soothingly and praise him when you're done. Remember, it's not the dog's fault he's unable to eat and it's only temporary until the appetite comes back.

Stuffing: This was my least favorite means of getting food into a dog. It was messy and degrading. In a nutshell, you make "food bombs" that are narrow enough to slide down the back of the dog's throat. These "bombs" are a mixture of wet & dry food that's been pureed into a texture that allows shaping. There are folks out there who are really good at doing this - and some dogs who just don't eat well become so used to eating this way that they'll stand calmly, lift up their little heads and open their mouths like guppies in anticipation for the next "bomb." Since all we care about is getting nutrition into the dog, if this works for you, that's what counts.

IV: A "no brainer." At this point, a dog is so ill that this is pretty much the last resort. It's no substitute for the calories gotten from real food, but sometimes it serves as a band-aid until the dog is back on its feet and able to eat the real thing.

Stomach tube: Proverbially speaking, this is what separates the men from the boys. When I was faced with a dog whose heart medication caused anorexia but who was otherwise healthy, I had but little choice to pull out all the stops. Syringe feeding, food bombs - these were not long term solutions. Guided by my vet, we made an informed decision to insert a stomach tube. Mind you, at the time we thought it would be a short term fix until my dog ate on his own. Keep reading.

The first tube put in was an ugly, brown rubber tube that was SO long, it had to be wrapped around my dog's mid section and secured with a lady's tube top when not in use. I prepared the food as if I was going to syringe it into my dog's mouth, only it was syringed into a tube that had been inserted into his side over the stomach. In less than a week, the dog knew the sound of the blender, knew what was coming and would lie down on his side in preparation for his meal.

Each day before I approached the blender, I always offered the dog his meal in a bowl since it was my fondest desire that the dog eat like a dog. After many weeks, however, I knew this wasn't going to happen. Ever. At this point, my vet and I had a frank discussion about options and he mentioned a permanent tube, one inserted from the inside out. The "Bard" was a gastronomy device made of silicon that was successfully used to feed disabled children but had never been used in canines. My nearly 14 year old Puli would be the first dog to have the slick silicon "button" inserted. It fit flush against his stomach and a little "lid" flicked open like the flip-top portion of a tube of toothpaste. Compared to what I had been working with, it was a Porsche compared to an Edsel and no one else ever knew it was there.

The tube enabled my dog to live a couple of more years. Feeding him took less than five minutes and afterwards, he would run with the other dogs, bark into the wind, enjoy the sun on his back and know that I adored him. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Because of the seemingly radical step we took to ensure this dog's survival, it wasn't something I discussed openly. Too many people out there feel that if a dog can't eat on his own, he's not meant to live. To them I say, "Phooey." The dog wanted to live, to survive and feel the hand of those who loved him rubbing his ears. But he couldn't eat. His spirit was willing and he would have done anything to please me, but this one thing he couldn't do. How then, was I to deny him the one thing I could do to help him?

Cats: Needless to say, cats are not like dogs. They can get liver damage from not eating even for just a day or two. When a cat stops eating, their body will start to use its fat stores as fuel. The old fat stores are mobilized to the liver, which should begin fat burning. But when the fat arrives at the liver, the liver doesn't burn the fat efficiently and it accumulates in the liver.

The resulting liver disorder is known as "hepatic lipidosis", or "fatty liver disease." This condition may be suggested when blood tests show impaired liver function. Getting fatty liver disease is not isolated only to cats, and fasting cats don't always get this condition, they just seem more prone to it when they don't eat.

But according to the Cornell Online Consultant, there are 454 more possible Diagnoses for Feline Anorexia. Wow. A good web site you can visit here explains the different reasons a cat might not be eating, from acid stomach to ulcers and including fatty liver disease. The bottom line, however,is that you have less "wiggle room" when a cat won't eat. Tries these tips:

-Warm the food because warmed food has a stronger smell which will make a cat want to eat.
-Handfeeding: Sit with your cat and talk to her. Offer a little piece of food to her.
-Offer special treats like canned or pouched food instead of dry kibble.
-Offer tuna and cheese or milk or cream, all in small amounts.
-Tasty liquids, like water from tuna packed in water or, rarely, oil. Avoid tuna packed in vegetable broth as itmay contain onions. Try clam juice or low-salt chicken broth. Avoid onions and anything made with bouillan as it's too salty;
-Sprinkle some catnip on the food.

Pull out all the stops and make some Home Made Cat Food with this recipe:
Switch off the protein sources with each batch or two. Switch between:
- Half Pound of minced boneless chicken breast or thigh
- Six Ounces of dark-mean ground turkey or minced turkey
- Half Pound of lean, minced beef
- Half Pound of minced beef, chicken or turkey heart. About three times a week, include one chopped hard-boiled or scrambled egg. Occasionally substitute a five-ounce can of salmon or tuna for the meat. Avoid canned salmon or tuna for cats that are prone to urinary tract infections.

Mix foods together.

There are some drugs that can help stimulate a cat's appetite including Diazepam (Valium). Other drugs to ask your vet about are Periactin (generic name Cyproheptadine), Serax (generic name Oxazepam) and Dalmane (generic name Flurazepam). All have potential side effects so it's important to talk with your vet.

Syringe feeding and feeding tubes as mentioned in the section for dogs is also an option for cats.

Good luck and know that you're not alone. Feeding issues are among the most frustrating of concerns.
