It's my dog's birthday and I've been suckered into making a special doggie birthday cake for her... again. It's nothing all that complicated and its something anyone can do, but my dog absolutely loves it. So, if you want to make a special birthday cake for your dog, grab a nose plug, make sure you've got a strong stomach, and follow the directions below.
Step 1 - Get together your ingredients... a box of yellow cake mix, two hot dogs, a jar of creamy peanut butter, 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, one can of tuna (any kind will do). If you would prefer to use a different kind of cake mix, like angel food, white, etc., that's fine -- just don't use chocolate (chocolate is really bad for dogs).

Step 2 - Preheat your oven and follow the directions on the cake box. The cake I make is a double layered cake, with the frosting doing double duty as both a frosting and a filling -- but that's more to impress my kids than the dog. You can simply use any pan you normally use to make a cake.
Step 3 - Just before pouring the cake batter into the pan, throw the hot dogs (pre sliced) and 1/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese in with the mix. Pour into the pan and bake according to the cake box specifications.
Step 4 - Remove cake from the oven and let cool. While cooling, you can prepare the frosting. The frosting consists of two cups creamy peanut butter, one small can of tuna, 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese, and 1/4 parmesan cheese. Mix all ingredients together and smooth onto bottom layer for the filling. Place top layer of cake on top and frost the entire cake with your peanut butter, tuna and cheese mix concoction.
Step 5 - Finish off the cake by sprinkling 1/4 cup shredded cheddar all over the cake and dust it will a little more parmesan cheese, and you're done!
Now that you've finished the cake, the only thing left to do is put a few candles on the cake (depending on your pet's age) and sing happy birthday. So, call in the dog, family and friends, sing your favorite birthday song and slice up the cake to share. Well, maybe not to share.... perhaps you can make a separate cake for the human guests like I do. I love my dog, but I'm never going to love her enough to eat that cake.
Bon Appetit!
