The most common cause of dog pain is arthritis and joint pain.

If you are searching for answers to joint pain when asking "can I give aspirin to my dog for pain?" then you should know that aspirin isn't quite what you want. Yes, it can help in very small doses, but it can also cause more harm than good! You need a safer solution, something that won't cause severe side effects if given just a tad too much.

Aspirin has become a popular household item but this doesn't make it safe. Aspirin is an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). This is the same type of drug that is commonly prescribed for dogs with joint pain, but the prescriptions are more tolerable by dogs as it was developed specifically for dogs. However, all dog meds of the NSAID class can come with very severe side effects, possibly even killing your dog.

Aspirin and other synthetic joint pain medications cause an ongoing list of dangers. When asking "can I give my dog aspirin for pain?" you are looking to extinguish the pain that your dog is experiencing.

But did you know that medications like aspirin and other dog NSAIDs can cause ulcers (irritated holes in the stomach), a decrease in blood platelets (inability to clot blood), gastrointestinal issues (vomiting & diarrhea), kidney and liver damage?

Nutro Dog Food Review

One of the most startling things we have encountered in our review of the commercial dog food industry is the fact that many, if not most, commercial dog foods are quite possibly toxic, and dangerous for your dogs! One of the most disturbing revelations we encountered was the fact that many dog food makers use DEAD, EUTHANIZED pets and zoo animals, as sources for their dog foods! The consumer-public does not appear to be aware of this problem, and the reason is no surprise.

dog food for dogs with allergies

Most commercial dog food brands have healthy-sounding names, such as Nutro Dog Food, Beneful, Science Diet (all brand names are trademarks of their respective parent companies, and as an independent consumer advocate, we have NO affiliation with any commercial dog food manufacturer or brand.) In addition, many commercial dog foods display labels such as "all-natural," "organic," "holisitc," "gourmet," or "premium."

Dog Food

In fact, the dog food industry spend millions of dollars every year in an effort to convince the public that their dog foods are healthy. In addition, we found that the dog food industry regularly lobbies to Congress and the FDA to AVOID having to clearly label the source of the components of their dog foods! This shocked us, because if the dog food is actually healthy, then why the need to maintain the ability to use uncommon and lengthy scientific names in their ingredient list? Why wouldn't the commercial dog food companies want the public to EASILY understand what the dog foods are made out of??

So we decided to investigate different commercial dog foods, to see if we could determine what is actually in them, and where the components for the food actually comes from. Following is our review of Nutro Dog Food. More reviews are to come! Again, we are only disclosing the information that they have already publicly disclosed on their website, to see if we can make sense of it. We are NOT indicating an opinion one way or the other, whether or not this food is healthy.

We found descriptive words like "Natural Nutrition," "Ultra-Holistic Nutrition," and "Super-Premium," to describe their dog foods. Regarding ingredients, Nutro Dog Food lists "natural ingredients with added vitamins and minerals," and also "real chicken protein or real beef protein." Their website claims that there are "no artificial preservatives," nor are there "artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners."

The ingredients list is as follows: "Chicken Meal, Wheat Flour, Ground Whole Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Ground Rice, Chicken, Natural Flavors, Sodium Bicarbonate, Calcium Carbonate, Monosodium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Potassium Carbonate, Yeast Culture, L-Lysine, Salt, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Oxide, Dried Kelp, Lecithin, Garlic Flavor, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Riboflavin (source of Vitamin B2), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity)."

All in all, we could not find anything on the Nutro Dog Food website that indicated they were involved in any of the practices mentioned earlier in this article. We believe that the ingredient list does not indicate any chemicals known to be harmful to dogs or people. The inclusion of "ground whole wheat" and "dried kelp" leads us to believe that Nutro Dog Food is probably one of the healthy dog food brands on the market.

The whole point, however, is that there really is no way to know. The main driving forces behind all public corporations are profit, and increasing stock price. We believe it is the obligation of all responsible dog-owners to make sure they are aware of what's really in the food that they feed to their dogs!

Diabetic Dog Food - My Dog Has Diabetes, What Should I Feed Him?

When your dog is diagnosed with diabetes, it can be almost as traumatic as being diagnosed yourself. Your veterinarian is your source of information and medication. Two of the most important things to consider are your dog's diet and medication. You should have a regular feeding schedule and your medication administration should be timely as well. Diabetic dogs have either a deficiency of the production of insulin or the body's resistance to insulin. Your dog may have increased thirst, urination and hunger among other symptoms.

Carbohydrates/starchy foods turn into glucose in the body. Since the dog's ability to properly metabolize sugar, it is important to limit the carbohydrate intake in your diabetic dog food. Commercial foods composed of wheat and corn will need a larger amount of some high quality protein in their diet. That will allow the body to properly absorb additional nutrients rather than turn them into sugar. Often an owner does not realize how serious the problem is until the dog has reached a critical point. If your dog reaches the point of ketoacidosis, you will have to give your pet a very high quality protein dog food.

Dog Food

High fiber diets are also beneficial for diabetic dog food. By increasing fiber and reducing protein and fat, your dog will lose weight and this is often enough treatment for your dog. It depends entirely on the stage of the disease that is present. Healthy grains and fruits and veggies can be fed to your dog. Corn and wheat should be avoided completely. Boiled oats are a better filler. It can add calories without additional fat.

Vegetables should be ground. By grinding the food, you are releasing the nutrients necessary for good health. Dogs often cannot chew enough to release those nutrients. As a treat, instead of commercial treats, a slice of apple is ideal. Low calories and high fiber in apples.

If you continue to feed your dog commercial kibble, you have to read the label. The dog food label is constructed the same way human labels are constructed. The ingredients are listed in order of the percentage in the food. The first three ingredients listed should be high protein foods. They should not be by products, rice, or other low quality grains such as wheat or corn. Brown rice is preferable and oats are acceptable.

Tell Me About Acid Reflux in Dogs

Acid reflux in dogs is actually a condition that is known as Gastroesophageal reflux, and it is characterized by a reverse flow of intestinal or gastric fluids that is uncontrollable, and brings the fluids up into the tube that connects the stomach and the throat to one another, the esophagus. There are a couple of different things that may cause an occurrence of acid reflux in dogs, including a brief relaxation of the esophageal sphincter, the muscular opening at the base of the esophagus. Another cause for acid reflux in dogs is chronic issues with vomiting. In both dogs and cats this acid reflux can be relatively common, and although younger animals tend to be at a greater risk, acid reflux in dogs and cats may occur at any age.

dog food for sensitive stomachs

This disease is not a healthy occurrence in dogs or in any other animal for that matter because the stomach acid, bile salts, pepsin and other gastrointestinal components are capable of causing damage to the protective lining of the esophagus. This can quickly result in an inflammation of the esophagus, a phenomenon known as Esophagitis.

Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

The first step to analyzing the symptoms when you believe that your dog has Gastroesophageal reflux is to take a look at his or her behavioral history. The history of your dog's behavior can reveal a lot. For example, if a dog is spitting up or regurgitating food, whining or howling to indicate pain during swallowing, is losing weight or appears to have less of an appetite than usual, these are potential signs that your dog is dealing with this condition. Physical examinations may not always be able to reveal concrete findings regarding acid reflux in dogs. Severe esophagitis on the other hand may be easier to diagnose as it offers additional symptoms including fever and extreme amounts of salivation.

Acid reflux is capable of causing esophagitis with a varying amount of damage possible. Mild esophagitis caused by acid reflux in dogs may be limited to a mild amount of inflammation of the sensitive lining of the esophagus, while more severe levels of esophagitis may cause damage to deeper layers of tissue within the esophagus, causing greater harm. Acid reflux may occur in dogs any time that an anesthetic is administered, as this causes the gastroesophageal sphincter to relax enough to create the reverse flow of the stomach's contents into the esophagus. If the dog is positioned improperly during anesthesia or fails to fast properly before anesthesia is admitted, acid reflux may occur as a result.

Because younger dogs are still developing, their underdeveloped gastroesophageal sphincters put them at greater risk. The best means of diagnosis is the use of an esophagoscopy. This is an examination that uses an internal camera in order to view the esophagus and its lining. Changes in the mucus lining the inside of the esophagus will indicate whether or not acid reflux has caused damage to the sensitive tissue.

Most treatment for acid reflux in dogs can be done at home. Food should be withheld for a day or two, and then a low fat and low protein diet should be administered. Acid reflux in dogs can be combated by feeding small and frequent meals, and dietary fats and proteins should be significantly limited. This is because the fat in the food can decrease the strength of the muscle keeping the esophagus and stomach separated, and the protein in the food can stimulate the secretion of gastric acid into the esophagus. Another option for combating acid reflux in dogs is to administer medicine in the form of a gastrointestinal pro-kinetic agent. These medications are capable of improving the movement of the stomach contents through the intestines, and are also capable of strengthening the gastroesophageal sphincter. Even when on medication, however, a change in diet is necessary for combating acid reflux on a long term basis.
