Mustard for Health - Speed Up Your Metabolism and Improve Digestion

Mustard is known to be very helpful for digestion, and can help to speed up your metabolism.

Mustard produces such a tiny seed yet it yields many health benefits. Mustard is one of the most popular spices in the entire world and is used in every country as a favorite spice. Part of the cabbage family, mustard can be used in its whole seed form, as a ground powder or combined with wine, vinegar or some other liquid to create a loose paste.

There are three varieties of mustard: black, brown and white. The mustard plant grows to be quite tall and has a bright yellow flower.

It was imported to US through Spanish missionaries and seen as a cure-all. Its sharp and bitter taste, especially mixes into paste with vinegars, gave off a medicinal fume long before its health benefits were discovered.

Better than a Vitamin

Mustard seeds are a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids as well as calcium, dietary fiber, iron, manganese, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, protein, selenium and zinc. Selenium is a nutrient that has been shown to help reduce asthma, arthritis and certain cancers. Magnesium also reduces asthma and lowers blood pressure. The effects of mustard are currently being studied for menopausal women and on migraine attacks.

Other Healthy Benefits

Just a few of mustard's possible healthy benefits include:

Speeds up metabolism

Stimulates digestion, increasing saliva as much as eight times more than normal

Inhibits cancer cell growth and possibly prevents other types of cancer as well

Treatment of skin diseases through the application of sulfur found in mustard

Reduces in the severity of asthma

Decreases symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis

Lowering of high blood pressure

Prevention of migraines

Facilitation of gastric juices which aids digestive problems and gives digestive aid

Soothing of sore throats, bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia

Disinfectant qualities it provides

Additionally it has four powerful qualities: it is antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic and has anti-inflammatory properties.

How to Add Mustard to Your Diet

Mustard is for more than just hot dogs at the ballpark. Whether in ground powder form, seed form or out of the bottle, there are multiple ways to include mustard into your diet to reap its benefits. And since its pungent, tangy taste enhances food so uniquely, it can easily replace fattier condiment options such as mayonnaise, butters and sugary catsups.

Mustard is often used in Indian, French, German and Irish foods. But there are many more options as well.

Include powdered mustards in salad dressings, egg dishes, pickles, marinades and vinaigrettes.

Sprinkle whole mustard seeds on salads, over vegetables and rice and on roasting meats. Try roasting them first in a dry skillet for a nuttier taste.

Mustard paste is useful. Bottled mustard can be rubbed on meats before roasting. Try dipping cut vegetables in a mustard sauce for a unique, flavorful dip. Mustard paste can easily be added to mayonnaises, vinaigrettes, marinades and barbeque sauces.

Mustard is so versatile; you will find many exciting and new ways to use this old standby.

Understanding Canine Digestion

Why It Matters

Last time we spoke about the workings of canine digestion. Today I'll tell a little about why it's important and the effects of providing your dog with substandard food typically found in commercial dog food.

Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

Your dog's digestive capabilities are no accident. They are a very carefully construed mechanism of its teeth, stomach and large and small intestines.

Beginning with his sharp, jagged molars, which are designed for gripping, tearing and shredding, and ending with the large intestine, which aids in the elimination of waste, all parts of the system work together to process the consumed food with purpose and deliberation.

With their short and simple digestive tracts, large amounts of vegetation, grains and fiber are difficult for dogs to process. Their systems are much more conducive to the breakdown of animal proteins and fat.

As such, pet foods which boast corn, soy or their corresponding meals as their primary ingredient are of little use to your dog, nutritionally-speaking. The "Crude Protein" analysis on pet food labels is only a measurement of the amount of nitrogen in a food -- not the quality of the protein. Because of this, pet food companies can use the cheaper by-products of human food production, such as soybean meal, to "boost" protein numbers. Animal-based protein is nutritionally superior for dogs. Animal-based protein is better absorbed and retained and is higher in essential amino acids like methionine, arginine, and taurine, all of which are absent in plant-based proteins.

Pancreatitis and Fatty Liver (Hepatic Lipidosis) are diseases that can be caused by a variety of factors such as infection, exposure to toxins, stress and improper diet. Pet food that is very high in saturated fats can certainly be a contributing factor.

Diabetes is a chronic degenerative disease of dogs that can be caused by a variety of factors such as genetics, stress and diet -- specifically, the feeding of excess amounts of simple carbohydrates. Many pet foods are loaded with simple carbohydrates such as white flour, sucrose, glucose and fructose. These are cheap, highly processed carbohydrate sources that can stress the pancreas, leading to diabetes.

In addition, clinical studies suggest that the long term feeding of chemical antioxidants (preservatives such as BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin) have extreme adverse health effects on animals.

As such, for optimal digestive health, it would seem to be a no-brainer to feed your beloved dog a diet rich in animal-based proteins and fats, moderate in carbohydrates, and free of chemical additives and preservatives. When perusing the commercial dog foods available in the grocery store aisles you might find this to be a tricky proposition. It seems most are nutritionally substandard, in at least one respect or another, with many failing in nearly all respects.

This is made even more difficult because dog food manufacturers use deliberately confusing double-talk to make the food appear much more nutritious than it really is. In fact, they lobby against the FDA for their 'right' to keep it confusing.

The ideal solution is to feed your pet freshly prepared food, thereby giving you the power to provide all the nutrients he needs to maintain a healthy body. Combining animal-based proteins with vegetables, pasta, rice, cereals and other foods will furnish all the requisite protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals, without all those pesky by-products, fillers and chemical additives and preservatives.

Good home cooking is really the best way to ensure that, "all systems are go."

The Four R's of salutary Digestion

The saying goes you are what you eat; well you are what you can digest, Ant. Eject and assimilate. Digestion is highly important. It is beloved to blame food intolerances for poor digestion, and this may be the case in some people, any way it may be just as likely that there is a bacterial infection, low stomach acid and digestive enzymes or poor gut micro flora that is contributing to poor digestion. Respected nutritionist Jeffrey Bland came up with the axiom of the 4 R's when trying to heighten digestion.

science diet for sensitive stomachs

R - Remove food sensitivities, parasites, fungus and bad bacteria.

Sensitive Stomachs

R - Replace nutrients needed for digestion.

R - Re inoculate the bowel with cordial bacteria.

R - Repair the gut with leading nutrients.

Always start by removing things from your diet and lifestyle that may be irritating the gut. Trying to condition the gut or take probiotcs will otherwise be useless. Take off coarse food intolerances such as wheat, dairy, soy or eggs if necessary. If you think you are sensitive to a food or any foods, Take off them from your diet for 2 weeks. If your symptoms heighten you may have a food intolerance, if your symptoms do not heighten it could be something else that is affecting your digestion.

Something else that may need to be removed from the gut is parasites and bad bacteria. To test for and Take off parasites, fungus and bacteria is beyond the scope of this article. any way there are good foods, supplements and herbs that help to kill parasites, bad bacteria and fungus. It is always best to have a stool test done and originate which agents kill the parasites, bad bacteria or fungus you might be infected with, otherwise you may be shooting in the dark. Genova Diagnostics produce a good array of stool tests for hanger-on infection.

Stress is an additional one major disruption for digestion. Stomach acid secretion is reduced considerably and it draws blood and power away from the bowels and diverts it to the brain and muscles to whether run away or fight. Stress comes in many forms - food intolerances, alcohol, financial stress, association stress, mental emotional stress, poor blood sugar regulation etc, so studying what is stressing you and how to carry on those stressors is imperative.

Once you have removed all things that are damaging the Gi tract it's time to start replacing things needed for salutary digestion. One of the most leading things you can do is to test your stomach acid levels and support your stomach with Hcl supplements. I explicate in my book exactly how to do this. Other things that need to be replaced are digestive enzymes, water, fibre and foods that help to stimulate bile secretions.

Only after you have removed and replaced should you entertain re-inoculating the bowel with salutary bacteria and use foods and nutrients that mend the gut.

Dog Digestion - Highlights to Chew On

It helps you to know about dog digestion differences. Though you are best buddies, there are important differences between you and your pooch. Your dog is not a miniature human with fur, though I see more and more dog owners acting like this actually is the case. To get your dog into the best shape he can possible be in, you need to understand his needs.

dog food for sensitive stomachs

Dogs may be a best man's friend. But here is the sad truth: humans can live up to 80 years and dogs barely 15! Humans have grown taller and live longer because of better health care, better hygiene and better eating patterns. Let's provide the same for our pet friends and improve their health and their lifespan, so they can bring us the morning newspaper for many years to come.

Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

So that's one... lifespan differs. Let's quickly highlight the important dog digestion differences.

Taste and Smell Capacity of Dogs

To a dog the smell of the dog food is likely to be of more importance than the taste (if he had to choose, that is). A dog has 80-220 million smell-sensitive cells over an area about the size of a pocket handkerchief, whereas man only has 2-10 million which compares to the size of a post stamp. There are dogs that make a living out of this supreme skill. So, your dog has a better developed organ of smell than you. What else is new?

Dog Table Manners are Pretty Close to Awful, How About Yours?

Have you ever compared table manners between the two of you? For your partners' sake, I hope you won that contest. You chew your food well since you have the typical omnivore set of teeth for the job. It's not because of the amount of teeth that your dog doesn't chew properly. He scores 42 to your 32. It's because of the different qualities you both have. His teeth are designed for ripping, tearing, shearing and crushing meat and bone. Your canine companion simply cannot make the lateral movement required to grind.

Dogs are fast eaters. This typical gorging behavior we also see in wolves and wild dogs. Well, compare these numbers and you will have a better understanding: a dog has about 1700 taste buds compared to you having about 9000 of those! Perhaps this also explains why you can enjoy a nice dinner meal and spend about an hour eating one course, whereas your dog rather gobbles up his meal in as close to 5 minutes. Just be aware of this when you go and spoil him with your canine cuisine arts. It's not to be ungrateful: he just can't help himself!

Dog Digestion Enzymes Kick in Later

The digestion of starch starts already when you chew your food, because of the amylase enzyme present in your saliva. Your dog lacks this enzyme so carbohydrates rather stick to his teeth leading to tartar build up. However, an advantage could be that since starch is not broken down already in his mouth to sugars, his chances of developing caries are much smaller. But because of the tartar your dog should still brush his teeth (with your help of course) or chew on bones, dental sticks are large pieces of meat.

Another difference is the lysozyme in dog saliva, which destroys pathogenic bacteria. And this is not the only barrier he has! Continue reading to discover the other strategies.

Resistance to Bacteria & Less Need for Hygiene

The acid in your dog's stomach is much stronger than in yours (pH 1-2 against yours 4-5) and is very corrosive! This explains why he doesn't easily get sick after eating of the street. The acid kills most of the bacteria. This also explains why dogs can eat raw meat (salmonella!) and digest bones. They are simply designed to or have you ever come across a wolf carrying with him a Bunsen burner? The acid compensates for the lack of chewing and digestive enzymes in dog saliva. Also dog digestion enzymes in the stomach are different from yours to be able to function in this acid.

The canine digestive tract is much shorter (20-80 cm compared to 1.5 m for you) so the food stays for a much shorter time in your dog's system. Average passing time is only 24-48 hours, whereas it can take you up to three days. The faster dog digestion also contributes to his resistance to bacteria. You are much more vulnerable when eating of the street. Don't compete with your furry friend on this one.

Dog Nutritional Needs

You can receive nutritional value from proteins containing 8 essential amino acids as you can create the others ones (non-essential amino acids) yourself. But your dog needs more than that! Your dog needs protein that give all 10 essential amino acids from a dog's perspective.

Another big difference between the two of you when it comes to nutritional needs is your vitamin C need. Your dog has the upper hand in this as he is capable of synthesizing vitamin C in his liver.

Main Energy Source and Classification

You get most of your energy from carbohydrates, whereas your pooch lives mainly from protein and fats. Unlike a cat, which is a true carnivore, a dog also needs some carbohydrates. But very little amounts though, as dog bodies are not designed to process large quantities of carbs. Your body has a larger digestive tract and the right set of teeth to grind corn. Dog digestion design and energy metabolism differs. You are definitively an omnivore (and this applies also for vegetarians). Your dog is best classified as a semi-carnivore. Sure a dog can survive on a cheap grain based diet but to thrive he definitively needs his portion of meat.

Dog Digestion Time

A question often asked is how long does it take for a dog to digest his meal. Probably this information is wanted to determine when it's time to let the dog out for a sanitary walk or it's just curiosity. There is no simple answer though as passage time depends on several factors. Each dog is an individual.

In general, raw dog food takes about 4 to 6 hours to move through your dog. Dry dog food takes a bit longer to digest and spends about 10 to 12 hours inside your dog.

There are many more differences of course and I cannot cover all of those here. The focus remains on the nutrient requirements of your dog, dog digestion related differences and your understanding of his needs. Though I may a sequel in the future.

Cigarettes - How to Quit Smoking and improve Your Digestion

Smoking affects the body in many dissimilar ways. The most prominent consequent is that it makes the stomach yield more stomach acid, also called gastric acid. Gastric acid is a necessary element for digesting food. If the gastric acid in the stomach is not strong enough digestion becomes incomplete.

dog food for sensitive stomachs

The main purpose of the gastric acid is to begin the breakdown of protein and get ready the breakdown of inescapable vitamins and minerals for later uptake in the small intestine. With too low acidity the man will get stomach pain from unprocessed food engaging straight through the intestines and in the long run he/she will suffer lack of vitamins and minerals.

Sensitive Stomachs

In order for the stomach to discharge the food it will strive to achieve the level of acidity needed with whatever means it has. If the man is a smoker the stomach will crave a cigarette.

But why do some people have enough acidity while others do not? The hypothesize is that some people have had their vagus nerve pinched while birth or before. The vagus nerve runs from the brain down to the large intestine, and messages from the brain to many of the inner organs are passed straight through this nerve. If the nerve has been pinched or jammed in the neck while birth, the messages from the brain do not trip freely to the recipient organs. Therefore, the stomach does not get the right signals to yield acid and will have to solve the problem with other means, and that could be straight through the craving of cigarettes.

So if you want to stop smoking you need to liberate the vagus nerve. Any kinesiologist or chiropractor can do this with a straightforward little policy that takes only a few minutes. Afterwards you will feel less desire for a cigarette, and now you can quit without any resignation symptoms and without nicotine gum or hypnosis.

With optimal stomach acidity you will also gain a estimate of inescapable side effects. You will commonly get a good digestion and you will discharge the nutrients better. Some sufferers with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (Ibs) will feel an revision and many people will caress their heartburn disappears.

Because of the good digestion your immune defence will enhance and you will caress a decrease in inescapable allergies, like electrosensitivity and sensitivity towards artificial fibers, like polyester.
