Free Homemade Dog Food Recipes

The current crisis in our pet food supply has many of us looking for homemade dog food recipes for our beloved pets. I have been cooking for our dog for many years and find that he likes mostly the same foods that we do. Each animal has his own preferences, just like we do. For instance, our Oscar will not eat tomatoes, but Bonnie loves them. Use these recipes as a starting place for homemade dog food recipes. Then, as you discover your pets preferences you can customize them more. One caution: you should not serve onion or chocolate to dogs as they contain substances that can be toxic to dogs.

Some veterinarians prefer raw meat for our pets. I prefer to cook the meat because of concerns over E Coli and other bacterial contamination. If you wish to use raw meat, do not use ground meat. The grinding process increases the possibility of contamination by providing more surface area for the bacteria to grow.

Dog Food

Canine Meat and Grain Menu

2 cups cooked brown rice
2/3 cup Lean beef
2 teaspoons lard -- or veggie oil
1/2 cup vegetables -- no onion*

Mix all together. You can serve the beef raw if you use chunks of beef. Do not serve ground beef raw, the grinding process increases the chances of bacterial contamination. Use any vegetables you like. You will find over time that your dog will leave any vegetables he does not like. Mix the above. Serve slightly warm, but not hot.

Chow Chow Chicken

You must remove the meat from the bones in this recipe. Chicken bones can easily splinter and cause choking problems in dogs.

2 chicken thighs -- or white meat
1 stalk celery -- sliced thick
3 carrot -- peeled and halved
2 small potatoes -- peeled and cubed
2 cups rice -- uncooked

Place chicken pieces in large pot. Cover with cold water (5 -6 cups). Add carrots, celery, and potatoes to water. Add salt to taste if you want. Cover and simmer on low heat about 2 hours until the chicken becomes tender. Add the rice, cover and cook over low heat for about 30 minutes until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Remove soup from heat. Pull the chicken meat off the bone ( it will practically fall off), discard bones. Return shredded pieces to pot. Stir well. Let cool. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.

Meaty Dog Biscuits

Use beef, chicken or lamb strained baby food for these biscuits.

2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 egg
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
8 to 10 tablespoons water
2 jars baby food meat, strained

Mix all ingredients together and knead for 3 min. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter, and place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 min.

Makes approximately 2 dozen doggie biscuits

Bacon Bites for Dogs

6 slices cooked bacon -- crumbled
4 eggs -- well beaten
1/8 cup bacon grease
1 cup water
1/2 cup powdered milk -- non-fat
2 cup graham flour
2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup cornmeal

Mix ingredients with a strong spoon; drop heaping tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a 350 oven for 15 minutes. Turn off oven and leave cookies on baking sheet in the oven overnight to dry out.

Ace's Favorite Cheesy Dog Biscuits

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound margarine -- corn oil
1 clove garlic -- crushed
1 pinch salt
1/4 cup Milk -- or as needed

Grate the cheese into a bowl and let stand until it reaches room temperature. Cream the cheese with the softened margarine, garlic, salt and flour. Add enough milk to form into a ball.

Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll onto floured board. Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown, and firm.

Makes 2 to 3 dozen, depending on size.

I hope that these free dog food recipes will inspire you to cook safe and healthy food for your pet.

Homemade Dog Food Recipes - The Very Best For Your Dog

You like eating home-cooked food better than canned or prepackaged foods with additives, preservatives and long lists of mystery ingredients, don't you? Dogs don't usually get a choice, but don't you want the best for your pets, too?

dog food storage

Have you heard the phrase "not fit for human consumption"? Pet food labeling regulations are less strict than for humans, so lots of the things considered unfit for human consumption go into the commercial dog food you feed your best friend - even if you use a premium brand.

Dog Food

Because you are not able to find out exactly what's in some foods, you can't make informed choices and your pet may not be getting adequate nutrition. That can lead to illness. Why take a chance with your dog's health?

And why make your dog sick with ingredients that can cause allergic reactions like soy, corn and grains? These are common ingredients used as fillers in store-bought pet food to keep production costs low, but your dog may be allergic to them.

Homemade dog food recipes can make cooking for your dog easier than you ever imagined. You choose the ingredients yourself, so you know when you're buying the best quality. But is it really worth the effort?

Here are 4 reasons why feeding your dog healthy homemade food is well worth the effort:

You Can Be Sure It's Fresh

Commercial dog food may have been sitting on store shelves for months - then it stays a few more weeks in your home if you buy in large quantities. When you put yourself in charge of the ingredients in your dog's food, the meals your pet gets are as fresh as the choices you make. Worries about expired and contaminated food are a thing of the past when you use healthy homemade dog food recipes to prepare your pet's food.

You Can Improve Your Dog's Health

Dogs have more energy when they get all the nutrients they need and nothing more - just like people. Dogs with dull coats, skin conditions and other recurring illnesses usually have overall health issues that go way beyond the symptoms you see. When you control the ingredients, you get a healthier dog.

You Can Manage Serious Conditions

Diabetes is common in dogs, and you can't be sure store-bought pet food is formulated for your dog's specific needs. Your dog could be allergic to soy, grain or corn, and the food you're using now probably contains all three. Plus, dogs - like humans - need specific amounts of fiber, protein and other nutrients to avoid other serious health conditions, and you can control the nutrients when you control the ingredients by making your pet's food based on expertly developed nutritionally-balanced healthy homemade dog food recipes.

You Can Extend Your Dog's Life

Studies have shown that dogs fed a diet of healthy homemade dog food live up to 8 years longer than those whose owners feed them commercial pet food. When you feed your pet a well-balanced homemade dog food diet you are helping to ensure that chronic conditions and diseases don't unnecessarily shorten your dog's life.

Homemade dog food has more benefits for your dog's health than you can imagine. And it's well worth the few minutes of your time it will take to make it. After all, a healthy, happy dog contributes to the happy home you want for your family.

If you aren't using expertly-developed homemade dog food recipes, you can't be certain your dog is getting correct nutrition. Healthy homemade dog food recipes put your mind at ease by showing you how to make delicious, nutritious food for your dog with ease and care. If you care for your dog, be sure to provide him or her with the very best food.

Dog Treat Recipes for Overweight Dogs

Dog treat recipes for overweight dogs can help them to return to a healthy weight. Commercially prepared dog treats are often very fatty and high calorie and therefore not recommended for consumption by overweight dogs. There are low fat versions of some dog treats available but these treats often compromise protein content to reduce the fat content. This lack of protein is not necessarily healthy for your dog especially if you are trying to help them build muscle and lose fat.

dog food

If you have an overweight dog, you may want to investigate and search for dog treat recipes that can help you to provide your dog with nutritious treats that will help them to return to a healthy weight. Most veterinarians define overweight in dogs as not being able to feel their ribs. In a fit dog you should be able to feel their ribs with only light pressure on the skin over the rib cage. If you have difficulty feeling the ribs on your dog, they are most likely carrying excess weight. This weight can shorten their lifespan and can also lead to hip dysplasia. For this reason, it is advisable that you help your dog to return to a healthy wait by replacing their usual fatty treats with those created from your own low fat dog treat recipes.

Natural Dog Food Recipes - A Necessity For Dog Lovers

Natural dog food recipes aren't just a cute thing to have around. They're not just a fun way to give your dog an occasional treat. These days, based on any intelligent commercial dog food analysis, they are an absolute necessity for those who care at all about their pets.

dog food bin

Even some of the healthiest dog food brands you can find in a store are disgusting blends of ingredients no caring person would ever knowingly feed their loved pet. If you don't make your own dog food now, it can only be because you don't understand what's going into the bags of food lining store counters.

Dog Food

Did you know that road kill finds it way into dog food? That's right, the rotting corpses rendering companies scrape off the highway go into your dog's food! So do euthanized pets. Seriously. Sick animals who were put to sleep end up in the supply chain for dog food manufacturers. Sometimes, the poison used to kill these animals doesn't even break down and its found in measurable quantities in commercial foods!

That's just the beginning, too. Dog food companies use additives that can't go into human foods because they are actually known to cause diseases and to encourage cancer. That bowl of chow you're putting in front of your pet may be nothing more than a glorified bowl of poison.

Natural dog food recipes are the way out. They're the best way to stop killing your pet. Researchers argue that the dog food you buy from stores increases the likelihood of your dog contracting deadly diseases. It decreases your dog's lifespan. It crushes his or her quality of life. Those who've joined the "make your own dog food" movement, however, have found a way to give their pets what they really deserve--healthy food that improves their lives.

Are you using natural dog food recipes? You should be. It doesn't cost much to make natural dog food. It's really easy to make something healthy and non-toxic for your loved pet. Anyone who cares about the well-being of dogs really should get away from the mass-produced "food" and should start creating the kind of food their best friends so richly deserve.

The high blood sugar in a dog with diabetes produces various symptoms like polyuria or frequent urination, polydipsia or increased thirst and polyphagia or increased hunger. To add, diabetic dogs tend to lose weight as they breakdown fat and protein that are stored in the body to make glucose and ketones. Diabetes in animals can also cause cataracts, appetite increase, exercise intolerance and recurring infections.

Treatment

Dog food secrets are not so secret at all. The way you feed your dog is an important part of treating dogs with diabetes. The best dog foods for your diabetic dog are those low carbohydrate types. Here are some recipes that may help you:

1 cup regular rolled oats
1 cup wheat germ
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
4 medium potatoes, cubed
3 carrots, chopped
1 stalk celery, cubed

Your dog may be allergic to some of these ingredients so you better test them out first. You can substitute Hypoallergenic dog food to the recipes here that require the use of ordinary dog food.

Aside from food, a regular exercise routine is much vital. Also, once your dog has been stabilized on insulin treatment, they may live long like other dogs of the same breed. It is also essential for you and your veterinarian to have constant communication and adhere to a scheduled treatment regimen. This will ensure that your pet is healthy.

Diabetic dog food, exercise and regular visits to your veterinarian can help manage your dog's diabetes; however, your presence and the warmth that you show your pet is the best care a pet owner can give - with or without diabetes.

Homemade Dog Food Recipes - Prepare Your Own Dog Food To Save Money And Prevent Illness And Disease

Homemade dog food recipes have become much more popular in recent times. After the tainted dog food that caused many dogs to die, people have turned to making their own dog food using healthy and nutritious homemade recipes. Here are some things to think about if you are considering preparing your own dog's food.

dog food storage bin

You can find out exactly what ingredients and nutrients are best for your breed of dog. Start out by discussing this with your veterinarian, and then ask the people where you purchase your dog's food. If you find that they are not knowledgeable, begin to do your own research, on the internet and at the public library. If your dog already has a health condition, such as diabetes, you will be able to prepare homemade recipes that have the right amount of fiber and protein for this condition. You will find that it is much less expensive to prepare these recipes at home with ingredients purchased from your grocery store or supermarket. There are so many dog food recipes available online, so you will want to purchase them from someone who knows what they are talking about when it comes to your dog's diet. Most dogs only live from seven to about fourteen years. You may be able to increase this, or at least know that your dog will live as long and healthy a life as you can possibly give him. You will save money and heartbreak by not having to give your dog expensive and painful treatments for diseases and illnesses that could be prevented by healthy and nutritious eating.

You probably treat your dog like a member of the family already. Continue to do this by preparing your own dog's food based on healthy homemade dog food recipes.

Pumpkin Dog Treat Recipes Can Be Grain Free For Your Wheat Sensitive Dog

Just in time for Fall-you can make a grain free homemade dog treat recipe with pumpkin.

dog food for sensitive stomachs

Grain free homemade dog treats--is there such a thing? Could be if you look for specialty flours at your grocery store. Trupanion pet insurance blog just published my pumpkin treat recipe and I expect it to be popular with the dogs who can't eat wheat.

Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

1000's of dogs are developing chronic itchy skin, "hot spots", and to many trips to the vet because they can't eat wheat or have another food sensitivity.

If you have a wheat sensitive dog, you may have searched to find a treat your furry friend can eat. It's tough. You can stand in the aisles and read labels or you can grab one of the newly available flours and make your own treats in under 30 minutes.

And they're really easy!

Instead of wheat, rye or white flour, you make these pumpkin "pupcakes" with garbanzo and fava bean flour. Made from two kinds of beans-garbanzo and fava-this flour has the same consistency as regular flour. And I found it as easy to work with as regular white or wheat flour. The brand I used is Bob's Red Mill and you may have to look in the natural foods aisle. Most of my local groceries carry it but they have it in different locations.

Here's how you make the treat. Mix up some canned pumpkin, the garbanzo & fava bean flour and dry powdered milk. Because of the moistness of the pumpkin, the consistency is going to be pretty wet. Bake.

I used a mini muffin tray for this pumpkin dog treat recipe and the dogs loved them!

Be aware though, because the pumpkin is so moist, you'll need to keep them in the refrigerator.

If you want to see this grain free dog treat recipe, please visit my website where I share nearly 3 dozen treat recipes for you and your dog.

Oh that sounds so good! Yuck!

Now I'm sure everyone has seen meat by-products labeled on the dog food bags. This means any type of meat, including zoo animals, road kill, and even dead, diseased and dying animals.

The only good thing about it (if you feel that way) is they do not include hair, horns, teeth and hoofs. Well that is a load off my conscience! NOT!

So again, if you are a caring and concerned dog parent, that is why you are reading this. Why would you want to feed your dog these ingredients? And please don't say, "they have been eating this so far, and no problems, why switch now?" or "It's the cheapest".

These commercial dog foods that you find on your local grocery store shelves are slowly killing your dog and you haven't even realized it. The wise choice would be to find good dog food recipes that are healthy and beneficial to your dog. You want to prolong your dogs life, not shorten it!

We can also tell you what the 9 healthiest commercial dog foods are. I'm sure you are curious after reading all of this! A lot of people just don't have the time to cook dog food recipes every day, so they supplement with one of these dog foods. I know how busy families get, with the after school baseball practice, the dance lessons, and your social commitments, not to mention work!

Why preparing your dog's food at home could be a better choice:

Dog Food

Most of us strive to provide the very best for our dogs. We make sure they get plenty of exercise, training, love and attention, tend to their medical needs, keep them safe, and believe to be feeding them pet food that is nutritious and wholesome. But are we? Commercial dog foods use preservatives, dyes, chemicals, fillers, animal by-products, corn, soy, additives, artificial flavors, and so on. And it is these ingredients, as well as some others, which are making our pets sick and slowly killing them. Pet food companies might have great ad campaigns depicting a yummy wholesome meal for our dogs, but have you read the ingredients?

This is why so many people have decided to take matters in their own hands. It's the best way to know what goes into your dog's food. By preparing homemade dog food recipes right in our own kitchens, we know we are feeding our dogs fresh foods and ingredients, without the use of preservatives, artificial ingredients, or any other contaminates that can harm our dogs.

Preparing homemade meals for your dog is easy and fast:

If you don't think you have time to cook for your pet, think again. It's super easy to do and you can make a big batch of food, separate daily food portions into freezer bags, and then thaw out as needed. Just be sure you use fresh vegetables or frozen - never canned vegetables.

Chicken Dinner Recipe for Dogs
2 pounds of boiled chicken meat finely chopped (no skin or bones) 1 cup cooked carrots finely chopped 6 potatoes boiled, peeled, and mashed 1 cup of cooked lentils 2 cups of fresh green beans steamed and chopped (or use frozen)

Finely chop and mash together cooked vegetables or simply mix them all together in a food processor. Then stir in the chopped chicken and separate portions into freezer bags until ready to use.

More homemade dog food recipes: You can come up with lots of recipes by using some other ingredients like turkey, brown rice, oats, potatoes, carrots, zucchini, sweet potatoes, green beans, squash, and peas.

Avoid using the following grains as they have been linked to food allergies: wheat, corn, and soy.

Final tips: Always consult your veterinarian about the nutritional requirements for your dog. Be sure to provide a variety of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Familiarize yourself with the foods that are not safe for dogs to eat (chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, citrus fruits, cold cuts, mushrooms, fatty foods, and cooked bones). Also, when changing your dog's diet, go slow. Too quick of a change can upset their digestive tract causing diarrhea.

Our dogs depend on us to care for their health and safety. Be a responsible dog owner. Get all the facts about feeding your dog and then make an informed decision. Don't take for granted that the commercial dog food you are feeding your treasured friend is healthy because of their fancy ad campaigns.

Always consult your veterinarian before making drastic changes to your dog's diet. Any current health issues, breed, and life stages will play a part in determining the nutritional needs of your dog.
